Syllabus

Europe´s encounter with the Muslim world. The imperial era and Europe´s presence in the Middle East after WW I. The decline of European clout after WWII. The Euro-Arab Dialogue. The issues which have marked current relations between Europe and the Middle East. Dynamics and tensions between Islam and the West. The evolution of Muslim communities in Europe. How to be a Muslim in Europe. Europe: land of Islam? From Arabization to Islamization. Islam as a symbol of assertion of the identity of Muslims. Integration vs. communalism. Islamic organizations in European countries. Global Jihad in Europe and al-Qaeda´s networks. Case studies of European countries: Great Britain, France, Germany , Italy, Belgium , the Netherlands and the Scandinavian countries.




Aims
  • To study the dynamics of relations between the Middle East and Europe since the colonial era
  • to devise the different forms of Islam in Europe and the politics of religion and community
